The earth and its eco-systems are under threat today as in no other time in recorded history. Our ‘modern’ and now global consumer lifestyles are putting enormous stress on the planets natural reserves. It is becoming apparent that we cannot maintain the ‘economic growth’ paradigm for much longer without reaching a point of no–return. The dominant mindsets of exploitation, ignorance and carelessness towards our environment need radical and urgent revision. When species are lost and habitats polluted, our lives are diminished and impoverished.
Humanity has the responsibility to care for and respect the earth; its forests, its animals, its oceans, its beauty and its future. If we care for the world and all its flora and fauna, not only are our fellow creaturely inhabitants of earth given a chance to enjoy life in their own right, but we ourselves become more human and enriched. Bio-diversity and the preservation of our natural heritage are good for the soul.
The challenge for us is to make changes to our lifestyles towards greater simplicity and sustainability. We can participate in a ‘gentle and green revolution’, for the sake of our earthly home and our own survival. There are many creative things we can do together to make a real difference.
